Unit 1

belief in God = kepercayaan kepada Tuhan This unit is about 'me and my neighbours'. The people living near us may be Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Christian or follow another religion. We learn about their religious practices and respect them so that the neighbourhood stays peaceful. Example: Aiman walks past a mosque, a Chinese temple, a church and a Hindu temple, and sees that his neighbours pray in different places. Watch out: respecting other beliefs does not mean giving up your own.
Kenali

Tempat ibadat di sekitar kita

Setiap agama mempunyai tempat ibadat.

place of worship = tempat ibadat Each religion has its own place of worship: Muslims pray at a masjid or surau, Buddhists go to a tokong, Hindus go to a kuil and Christians go to a gereja. Knowing these places helps us understand our neighbours' lives. Example: On Sunday morning, Jessica's family next door goes to church. Watch out: keep quiet when passing a place of worship and do not take photos or make noise without permission.
Semak kefahaman

Ravi beragama Hindu. Ke manakah dia biasanya pergi untuk beribadat?

matching religion and place = padankan agama dengan tempat ibadat First see which religion the question names, then think where its followers go to pray. The four religions each have their own place, so do not mix them up. Example: a Buddhist place of worship is called a tokong. Watch out: both a surau and a masjid are places where Muslims pray.
Fahami

Amalan agama jiran kita

Jiran kita mengamalkan ajaran agama masing-masing.

religious practice = amalan agama A religious practice is something believers do because of their religion's teaching, such as praying, fasting, going to a place of worship or celebrating a religious festival. Different neighbours have different practices; we simply learn about them and respect them. Example: Uncle Murugan lights an oil lamp at his door; Puan Salmah fasts in the day during Ramadan. Watch out: do not think a practice is strange or joke about it just because it differs from yours.
Semak kefahaman

Jiran Siti, Encik Tan, sedang bersembahyang di rumahnya. Apakah tindakan Siti yang paling sesuai?

not disturbing worship = tidak mengganggu ibadat When a neighbour is praying, they need quiet and focus. A suitable action is to lower your voice and leave them alone until they finish. Example: the aunt next door is chanting prayers, so Ming turns the television down. Watch out: shouting, ringing a bell or setting off firecrackers all disturb someone who is praying.
Mengapa?

Kepentingan menghormati agama jiran

Apabila kita menghormati agama jiran, kita hidup dengan tenteram. Jiran saling berbaik sangka, wujud persefahaman dan hubungan menjadi ramah mesra.

Contoh: Keluarga Aiman dan keluarga Mei Ling saling menghormati. Mereka selalu bertegur sapa dan tolong-menolong.

why respect matters = kepentingan menghormati When we respect our neighbours' religions, everyone lives calmly (tenteram), thinks well of one another (berbaik sangka), understands each other (persefahaman) and becomes friendly (ramah mesra). Without respect, misunderstandings and quarrels start easily. Example: two families of different faiths still greet each other and help one another often. Watch out: good relations are built through small daily actions, such as not criticising another person's religion.
Semak kefahaman

Apakah kebaikan jika kita menghormati agama dan kepercayaan jiran?

benefit of respect = kebaikan menghormati Think about what happens between neighbours when everyone respects each other's beliefs. The benefit is usually about peace, harmony and trust. Example: when we respect a neighbour's festival, they may invite us to visit their home. Watch out: respecting a religion is not the same as joining its ceremonies.
Amalkan

learning politely = mengenali dengan sopan If you want to know about a neighbour's religious practice, ask kindly, listen carefully to the answer and do not judge first or carry prejudice (prasangka). This way you learn correctly and the neighbour feels respected. Example: Aiman politely asks Ravi why mango leaves hang over the door, and Ravi happily explains. Watch out: keep a friendly tone when asking; never make it sound like teasing.
Semak kefahaman

Lina ingin tahu tentang amalan agama jirannya. Apakah cara yang sesuai?

the right way to learn = cara mengenali yang betul The best way to learn about a neighbour's religion is to ask directly and politely, then listen carefully. Guessing on your own or gossiping behind their back can cause misunderstandings. Example: ask, 'May I know how this festival is celebrated?' Watch out: if someone does not want to answer, respect that and do not keep pushing.
Amalkan

Bantu jiran menyambut perayaan

Kita boleh membantu jiran membuat persiapan perayaan agama, seperti Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Tahun Baharu Cina, Deepavali dan Krismas.

Contoh: Sebelum Deepavali, Aiman membantu keluarga Ravi menyusun pelita. Ravi pula membantu Aiman menggantung lampu sebelum Hari Raya.

helping prepare a festival = membantu persiapan perayaan When neighbours celebrate a religious festival, we can help them prepare, for example decorating, carrying things or minding small children. Helping each other strengthens friendship and teaches us about different festivals. Example: before Deepavali Aiman helps Ravi's family arrange oil lamps; before Hari Raya Ravi helps Aiman hang lights. Watch out: ask first which tasks you may help with; the religious rites themselves are carried out by the neighbour's family.
Semak kefahaman

Keluarga Mei Ling sibuk membuat persiapan Tahun Baharu Cina. Apakah yang boleh dilakukan oleh Siti?

offering help = menawarkan bantuan When neighbours are busy preparing a festival, a good neighbour offers, 'Do you need help?' and follows their arrangement. Thinking only of what you will get, or criticising their decorations, is not good behaviour. Example: helping a neighbour carry festive goods into the house. Watch out: help is given out of kindness, not to get a reward.
Ingat

Peka terhadap pantang larang jiran

Setiap agama ada perkara yang dielakkan. Kita perlu peka:

  • Jangan bising semasa waktu ibadat jiran.
  • Berpakaian sopan apabila melawat rumah ibadat.

being sensitive to taboos = peka terhadap pantang larang Every religion has things its followers avoid, such as certain foods, noise during prayer times or improper clothing in some places. Neighbours should notice these carefully so that no one feels hurt or embarrassed. Example: before a gathering, Siti first asks what food each neighbour can eat. Watch out: food given to Muslim neighbours should be halal, and many Hindus do not eat beef.
Semak kefahaman

Ibu Siti ingin memberi kuih kepada jiran Muslim. Apakah yang perlu dipastikan?

thinking before giving food = fikir sebelum memberi makanan Giving food to neighbours is kind, but first think about the food rules of their religion. Muslims only eat food that follows their religious rules, so make sure the food suits them. Example: before giving cakes to a Hindu neighbour, check that there is no beef inside. Watch out: how expensive the food is, or where it was bought, has nothing to do with religious rules.
Pilih semua

Pilih semua tindakan yang menghormati agama jiran.

spotting respectful actions = kenal pasti perlakuan menghormati Look at each action one by one: does it disturb, mock or hurt the neighbour's beliefs? If yes, do not choose it; choose only the actions that make the neighbour feel respected. There is more than one answer. Example: wishing a neighbour well during their festival shows respect. Watch out: laughing at religious clothing or playing around a place of worship is disrespectful.
